Obituary for Albert R. "Al" Szembrot

Passed away peacefully on September 26, 2021 at the age of 95. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Nary, and siblings: Watson, Jennie DeMarco, Helen DeMarco, William, Pauline Gries and twin sister, Wanda McLaughlin. Survived by his loving children: Michele (Tom) Driscoll, Mary Lou (Ned) Pease, Dick (Karen), Jean Brown, Joe (Nancy), Barb (Darryl) Walczak and Terry (Michael) Zazzara; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brothers Carl and Robert; sisters-in-law Audrey Szembrot and Diane Nary many other family members and friends.

Al was born and raised in Albany, New York and moved to Rochester after a blind date that would result in a 63-year marriage. Working several jobs to provide for his wife and seven children, one would think Al would not have time for social activities. Nothing could be further from the truth. Al was a dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus and Fourth Degree, and a Past Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator. Al was an active member of Good Shepherd parish in Henrietta. When Al finally stopped working, he was able to travel and spend time with his growing family.

After leaving his home in Henrietta, Al moved with Betty to Chapel Oaks and most recently was a resident at Cherry Ridge, both facilities within the St. Ann’s Community. Al was fond of all games. Dice, cards, dominoes, Scrabble, crosswords and sudoku were among his favorites. Al worked on countless jigsaw puzzles in his lifetime. Al was a sports fan; An avid fan of the Buffalo Bills, Notre Dame football and Tiger Woods. He also rooted hard for any College team his family attended.

And then there were the jokes. Al was master of the dad joke and in time became the creator of the grand-dad and great grand-dad jokes. After church, while getting a haircut, in the grocery store and even with his nurses, Al’s favorite opening line was “Did you hear the one about…”

A private Mass of Christian Burial and interment to be held at the family’s convenience. Memorials may be made to St. Ann’s Foundation. To honor Al, share a joke with someone and tell those you love “I love you very, very, very much.”
