Obituary for Joan Buerkle

Joan Buerkle passed away on Sept. 2, 2020 after a long illness, with her devoted husband Dan by her side.

A lifelong resident of Rochester, Joan grew up attending school and church at Our Lady of Mt Carmel and recounted such fond memories of her time there. When her family moved to Irondequoit, she attended Eastridge High School where she met Dan, to whom she was married for 55 years.

Joan enrolled in nursing school when her youngest child went to preschool and drew immense pleasure from her career and coworkers. She also had a lifelong passion for the arts. She performed in various local community theaters, enthusiastically attended an array of performances, was an avid reader who self-published two books, and commenced tap and ballet classes at age 70!

Joan always saw the very best in others. She loved to socialize and was often the center of a group, telling an embellished story, to the delight of her audience. She was a collector of many things but her favorite activity was to gather people. She preserved friendships from every aspect of her life and always had room for an extra seat at her well-set table.

Joan’s greatest joy was being a Noni. She has 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild. She will live on in each of them. She offered endless support and love and could always be found on the sidelines, in the audience, at a gallery, or even at a workplace cheering them on. We will all honor her memory by being kind and supportive of one another and putting our families first.

Joan is predeceased by her mother, Madeline Ingutti. She is survived by her father, Jim Ingutti; husband Dan; children Julie (Rob Matuska), Douglas (Mimi), and Amy (Kurt Lyons); grandchildren Madeline, Daniel, Matthew, Zachary, Sarah, Max, Emily, Micah, Ethan, Dylan, Will, Abby, and Jack; great grandson, Luca; siblings Jim, Judy, Janice, and Jackie, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends.

Burial was private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chautauqua Foundation PO Box 28 1 Ames Avenue Chautauqua, NY 14722, Attn: Chautauqua Family Scholarship Program in Joan’s memory.
