Obituary for John M. "Steve" Burns

John M. "Steve"  Burns
Irondequoit: March 21, 2017, following a lengthy illness. Born in Wichita, Kansas he remained a “Kansas boy” for the rest of his life. Ordained to the priesthood at St. Benedict’s Abbey, Atchison in 1959, he served as a priest in Kansas and as a missionary in Brazil before laicized in 1971. He later married Kathleen Hansen, who died in 1977. Steve was a teacher, and well respected and successful sales manager for McGraw Hill before retiring in 1992. Steve enjoyed politics, movies, reading, raconteurs, and dinner parties with his friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, Mary Eileen and Aloysius Burns, brother, Bob, and his wife, Kathleen. He is survived by his beloved wife Sharynne, sister in law, Debra Wood, three godchildren, many friends, and two spoiled cocker spaniels, Woody and Heidi. Additionally, Steve’s family wishes to thank Amy and Sarah, who helped care for him over the past year of his illness.

Friends are welcome Sunday 2-5pm at the Dreier-Giltner Funeral Home Inc. 1717 Portland Ave. Steve's Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday 9:30am at St. Kateri at St. Margaret Mary Church. Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetary. Memorial donations in memory of Steve may be made to St. Benedict’s Abbey, 1020 North Second Street, Atchison, KS 66002 or go to www.kansasmonks.org to give a donation.
