Obituary for Margaret L. Young

Irondequoit: Margaret (Marge) LaTour Young passed away peacefully surrounded by family on June 4, 2019 one month shy of her 96th birthday. Born and raised in Kingston NY, Marge graduated in 1945 from State University College at New Paltz where she majored in education. In July 1945 she married the Rev. Paul M. Young, Jr. with whom she shared an energetic life for the next 57 years, lovingly raising their family of three children. Together they followed his calls to Lutheran parishes in Greenport Long Island, Yonkers NY, Hudson NY and, in 1958, Resurrection Lutheran Church in West Irondequoit. In 1983, they transferred to The Lutheran Church of the Incarnate Word in Rochester. Marge taught elementary grades in the West Irondequoit School District where she nurtured hundreds of students with care and enthusiasm for 25 years. In addition, she was a constant partner with her husband in church – singing in the choir and working on women’s groups. For this work, she was recognized as “Woman of the Year” by Rochester Area Church Women United. She acquired great strength from activities at churches she and her husband served. Her love of classical sacred music brought her joy, comfort, peace and fulfillment. Throughout their marriage, Marge and Paul traveled extensively throughout Europe and North America. She loved spending time in the summer at her children’s homes at Lake Bluff on Lake Ontario and Cayuga Lake.
Marge is predeceased by her husband and her two sisters, Natalie (Sherrill) Keyser and Elizabeth (Herman) Knaust. She is survived by: her three children, Christine (Thomas) Cassel of Moorestown NJ; Lawrence (Jennifer) of Ithaca NY; and John of West Irondequoit; her six grandchildren, Joseph, Bradley, Thomas, Jack, Robert and Rebekka; her five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends are welcome Sunday 6-8pm at the Dreier-Giltner Funeral Home, 1717 Portland Ave. A Funeral Service will be held Monday at 11am at The Lutheran Church of the Incarnate Word. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the West Irondequoit Foundation, 321 List Avenue, Rochester NY 14617 which provides teachers’ grants, or The Lutheran Church of the Incarnate Word, 597 East Avenue, Rochester NY 14607.
