IRONDEQUOIT – Thursday, February 9, 2023 at age 99. Pre-deceased by her husband Charles, parents Felicia and Anthony Amico, daughter Martha, brothers Vincent and Frank Amico. Survived by her children Michael of GA, Virginia (John) DiGiovanni and Joseph (Alyson) of NC; sister-in-law Dorothy Amico of Lyons, NY; grandchildren Michael (Barbara McCauley) DiGiovanni, Ann Marie (Michael) Cohoon, Nicholas Laudenslayer and 5 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Mary was born in the early 1920s, grew up in Lyons, NY during the Great Depression, experienced the anxiety of being an engaged young woman during WWII, and later the fear of being a mother during the Vietnam Conflict. She raised 4 children, one of whom had multiple disabilities. Mary was one of the Founders of the ARC of Wayne County. She saw her children grow, marry, and have their own families. She was able to see and get to know her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She traveled to China with the “China Girls,” visited the Eastern Bloc, her mother’s home in Sicily, and the Dominican Republic.
Mary enjoyed people. She could sit and talk with her friends endlessly. She would listen to her children’s stories so she could know their experiences and the events occurring in their lives. Mary was quick witted and always had a remark about whatever the topic of conversation was. She was so quick to remark at times, that it seemed she had no filter. She liked food. She liked goodies, especially chocolate, potato pancakes, shellfish, tripe and ..…chocolate. Her faith was unshakable. She knew she was coming to the end of her life and would say, “The Good Lord isn’t ready for me yet.” She always had her rosary with her and prayed the rosary at least daily. She passed away peacefully with her daughter at her side.
Friends are welcome Wednesday, Feb 15th from 4-7 PM at the Dreier-Giltner Funeral Home, 1717 Portland Ave. Mary’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, Feb 16th 10:30 AM at Peace of Christ Parish at St Ambrose Church. Entombment Holy Sepulchre Cemetary. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Sunset House, 3746 St Paul Blvd, Rochester NY 14617, where Mary spent the final days of her life.
