Obituary for Sister Janet Korn

Brighton: Sister Janet Korn, RSM (Sister Joan Korn) was called home by her God on July, 16, 2022 during her 65th year as a Sister of Mercy.

Sister Janet entered the Sisters of Mercy from Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish shortly after graduating from Our Lady of Mercy HS in 1956. After teaching at St. Thomas the Apostle, Rochester and Our Lady of Lourdes, Elmira, she became a missionary in Santiago, Chile. After nine years in Chile, she returned to the USA for study at Nazareth College. Receiving a BA in History, she returned to Chile for six more years.

After spending 15 years in Chile, she returned to Rochester to serve on the Executive Council of the Sisters of Mercy, became Director of the Associate Program, was actively involved in the New Membership Program. She served as Social Justice Coordinator for the Diocese of Rochester and for the congregation from 1999 to 2022. Sister Janet spearheaded efforts and led the development of La Casa, a temporary home for migrant workers in Sodus, NY. She established Melita House, a residence for unwed mothers in Rochester; and has worked tirelessly to reestablish and guide St. Michael's Woodshop, a ministry reaching out to inner city Rochester teens.

Sr. Janet was active with a national group concerned with establishing and conducting programs for returning missionaries. She became Chairperson of the Task Force on Homelessness and Housing initiated by the Sisters of Mercy and was named Director of Catherine McAuley Housing.

She is lovingly survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Maureen Korn, her sister and brother-in-law, Kathy and Jeff McKenna, nieces, nephews, and the Sisters of Mercy.
