Obituary

Brighton: Sister Dorothy Loeb, RSM (Sister Mary Claude) was called home by God on December 8, 2019, during her 77th year as a Sister of Mercy. Sister Dorothy entered the Sisters of Mercy a year after graduating from Our Lady of Mercy HS. She studied nursing at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, received her BS in Nursing from St. Louis University and studied Nursing School Administration at Catholic University, Washington, DC.
Sister Dorothy joined the nursing staff at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell, in 1952, and then became a Nursing Instructor. In 1974 she served as nurse at Our Lady of Mercy HS, then became a Pastoral Assistant at St. Bridget Parish and joined the staff of Bethany House. For five years, she made her nursing rounds as a Sister of Mercy among the rural poor in Selma, Ala. A member of the Edmundite Southern Mission in Alabama, she ministered to the poverty-stricken residents of the Deep South. Her later ministries included the House of Mercy, Melita House, the Administration Offices of the Sisters of Mercy and the Congregational Archive Office. In 1981 she received a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition and support for dignity-integrity of Rochester, a ministry she was very much involved in. She is survived by her nephew, Lawrence Reinhardt, and the Sisters of Mercy.

Friends are welcome Thursday, December 12 from 4 to 7 PM at Mercy Center, 1437 Blossom Road, where her vigil service will be held at 7 PM. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, December 13, 10:00 AM at Mercy Center. Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to the Sisters of Mercy.
