Obituary for Sr. M. Augustine Malley

Brighton: Sister Mary Augustine Malley (Marilyn) was called home by God October 8, 2022 during her 69th year as a Sister of Mercy.

Sister Mary Augustine, a 1949 graduate of Our Lady of Mercy High School, entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1953 after receiving a BS in Biology from Nazareth College. She received her MS in Biology from the University of Notre Dame.

She was a teacher at Our Lady of Mercy HS, Cardinal Mooney HS and Notre Dame HS, Elmira. In 1976 Sister Augustine began teaching science to students at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell, while also ministering in the Pastoral Care Department of the Hospital. She received certification in Clinical Pastoral Education from Strong Memorial Hospital and served as the Director of Pastoral Care at the hospital for several years.

She was one of the initiators of the Hornell Chapter of “Make Today Count”, a support group of people with cancer. She was the recipient of the first Employee of the Year” award at St. James. She became a member of the Sisters of Mercy Task Force on AIDS and for many years contributed the “Chaplain’s Log” and later the “Chaplain’s Chat” to the newsletter of St. James Mercy Hospital, writing about many facets of religion, health care and care giving, support groups and reflective notions on the seasons and holidays.

She is lovingly survived by her brother, Rev. William Malley, SJ, in Manila, several nieces, nephews, friends and the Sisters of Mercy. Donations in her memory may be made to the Sisters of Mercy,

Funeral: Friday, October 14, 10:00 AM, Mercy Center Chapel. Prior to Mass the casket will be open in Chapel for 45 minutes. Burial will follow in the Malley family plot at Holy Trinity Cemetery,
1460 Ridge Rd, Webster, NY 14580. Cemetery is located behind Holy Trinity Church
