Obituary for William G. Schlageter

Greece: Saturday, September 7, 2019 at the age of 91. Predeceased by his brother, Donald. Survived by his loving wife Jean; sons, William (Maria), Robert (Valerie) and Alan (Mary) Schlageter; 6 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Betty (Bruce) Guite; nieces and nephews; cousins.

For 36 years Bill taught the entire range of secondary industrial arts since beginning in public education in 1950 after graduation from Oswego State. He served the educational community as a teacher of general shop and graphic arts at Benjamin Franklin High School, Frederick Douglass Junior High School and Edison Career and Technology High School in Rochester, and in the executive capacity as head of the Industrial Arts department at Benjamin Franklin High School, Director of Keuka Lutheran Camp, Chairman of the Industrial Arts Instructional Council of Rochester, President of the Monroe County Industrial Arts Association as well as delegate and treasurer of the N.Y.S.I.A.A. In 1974 the American Industrial Arts association named Bill the 1974 N.Y. State Teacher of the Year. In addition to his professional career Bill was a lifelong member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, serving the church as a Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, president and vice president of the church council.

Friends are welcome Monday, September 23rd from 4-7pm at the Dreier-Giltner Funeral Home, 1717 Portland Ave. Bill's Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, September 24th, 11am at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. Interment Mt. Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church and/or to St. Ann's Home Foundation.
