To the family of Daniel M. Lawrence, Sr...
Although we have never met, I thought I might share my thoughts and memories. I am the wife of Gene Cairo, who so enjoyed and cherished his friendship with Dan. When my husband first spoke of Dan, he fondly referred to him as "The Baker". Apparently, years ago, Dan religously came to basketball games at East High. Oft times he came directly from Eastman Kodak in his work clothes where he was a chemist. To young Gene and Coach Sal Rizzo, the white lab coat looked like the attire of a Baker. And thus, the nickname "The Baker" was born. That name stuck throughout my husband's and Dan's forty plus year friendship.
Over the years, stories of their trips to the Diner where The Baker would regularly order grilled cheese and under cooked french fries and the metal bar that he used to lock the steering wheel so no one would steal his car, made us all smile!
When Gene was seriously ill, The Baker helped me by taking Gene to doctor's appointments. And many times, The Baker and I would share a bleacher seat together at Batavia Blue Devil HS basketball games. He would not only impart his basketbal knowledge to novice me, but he would share stories of how he met his wife and the things they would do together.
Dan's kind heart and ready laugh will be sorely missed. And if they have nicknames in Heaven, I'm certain that he will be known as "The Baker"...
May your fond memories bring you comfort. They will for us...
With warm regards and sympathy,
Diane Cairo
