When we remember a person who has gone before us, we remember the memories they made and the hearts they touched. We remember the beautiful things they left behind and the wisdom they shared. We remember who they loved and how they loved. If this is the measure of a life then my Grandmother led an amazing, admirable life. It was a life full of love, beauty, respect and certainly length. She touched all those she came in contact with and, what's more, she made a great impression on their lives. Full bellies make happy hearts! I think a lot of us have fond memories of her warm kitchen and some of the most delicious and comforting smells that I will ever know. Food made with love is the most delicious kind and her lasagna will never be beat. But it was also the act of making it and serving it. It was love on a plate. She was providing for those she loved. It was a requirement to leave her home with a full stomach AND leftovers. It made her happy to see those she cared about enjoying her food. After dinner there was always raucous and cutthroat games of Uno and 13, coffee and loving forced desserts plus sheets of extra special chocolate cupcakes. A few set aside with my favorite sprinkles, just for me and no one else! She always strove to make others happy! To feed them (a lot!), sewed for them, sheltered them. What's more, she instilled this desire in everyone around her. She gave so much that it made you want to give to others in return. I loved this Christmas bell that played a tune when you pulled the cord. She kept that Christmas ornament hanging over her kitchen door, year 'round, for over five years because she knew it gave me joy to pull the cord and hear the tune. It was a small thing, but so impactful to a little girl. It was understanding. I remember learning to make beaded safety pins in school (all the rage at the time). I showed a few that I made to my Grandma and the very next day she produced an astonishing trove of buttons, beads and beautiful shiny things so we could make some of our own, together. We crafted and created, talked and played the whole day! I went home with a box full of treasures, a head full of wonderful memories and a happy heart. I will always have those beautiful memories and countless others. I will always cherish the wisdom I gained through these experiences and by her example. She left us all with priceless gifts meant to improve our own lives. Still giving, always. This is not the end, but the celebration of a long, happy, truly beautiful life and the reward that follows. She knows she is loved and will always be loved. We all know we are loved by her, with her whole heart. Thank you Grandma for all your precious gifts, for your comforting presence, for your playful spirit and your great ability to nurture. I love you. You are always and forever in my heart.
