Obituary

Predeceased by his parents Oscar and Marjorie, sister Diana, wife Linda and son in-law Joe. Survived by his children Shane (Maggie), Matt (Chrissy) and Dawn along with his grandchildren Brittany, Cameron, Julia, Madison, Evelyn and Charlie. Robert passed after a brief illness with his children by his side. The family would like to thank the staff at Rochester General’s Emergency Department, along with those in the MICU.
Robert “Bob” was a lifelong resident of Irondequoit NY. He lived within the same 5 square miles his entire life, except for the two years he spent in the United States Army. Bob served honorably from 1963-1965 on Active Duty and in the USAR until 1969.

Bob spent many years in drum corps, traveling the country playing with the Rochester Crusaders and the Empire Statesmen. He served as an active member of the Ridge Culver Fire Department from 1965-1991, most notably as Fire Chief and continued to serve socially up until his death. His father (Oscar) served for over fifty years at Ridge Culver, Bob followed in his footsteps and the tradition has carried on with his son Shane who still serves today. Bob truly loved the fire service with all his heart and continued to speak passionately about it up until the day he died. He mentored many firefighters who went on to have successful careers within Ridge Culver and other Fire Departments across Monroe County.

Bob met the love of his life, Linda in the early 1980’s. She truly changed the trajectory of his future as he fell head over heels for her and they were married on 7/2/83. They spent almost the next 30 years cherishing each other, raising a family and being infatuated with each other’s company. Bob truly suffered heartbreak when she passed in 2008 from cancer but continued to cherish her until the day he died.

Bob worked for Stromberg Carlson, followed by Gleason Works where he was a Manager for most of his career. He retired in 2010 after nearly 40 years at Gleason Works. He cherished his New York Yankees baseball and loved watching the Green Bay Packers. In the late 1990’s and through the 2000’s Bob and Linda went to great extents to decorate their house for Christmas with exterior lighting. Bob would often sit in the kitchen of their home and revel at the traffic jam they created from cars stopping to view the light display.
He worked hard all of his life and gave his children and family the opportunities needed to be successful and happy. He served his community, loved Linda with everything he had and now can rest in peace by her side.

Friends are welcome Friday 3-8pm at the Dreier-Giltner Funeral Home 1717 Portland Ave. (just north of E. Ridge Rd.) A Memorial Service will be held Saturday 10am in the funeral home chapel. Interment to follow at the Irondequoit Cemetery at 11am. Please visit www.giltnerfuneralhomes.com to share a memory of Bob.

Shane and Family, Our hearts are heavy with the news of Bob's passing. I will always remember him as my first RCFD Fire Chief. His distinctive voice and quick humor served him very well. Now he can join Linda and they can be together again. Rest in peace Chief!
