Obituary for Sr. Margaret Louise Snider

Brighton: Sister Margaret Louise Snider (Sister M. Barnabas) was called home by her God on March 2, 2016, during her 53rd year as a Sister of Mercy. She celebrated her 50th Jubilee in 2013. Sister Margaret Louise taught at Our Lady of Mercy High School from 1967 to 1971. For the next year, she assisted in clerical work at Catherine McAuley College Reading Lab. From 1972 – 1980 she performed clerical work at the Diocesan Office of Human Development. In 1980 Sister Margaret Louise petitioned the Sisters of Mercy to allow her to start a ministry to the rural poor. She saw that the rural regions were significantly unsupported, and began Steuben County Rural Ministry in Canisteo, NY on September 1, 1980. She retired from that ministry in 1987. For the next eleven years, she was Pastoral Minister to the sick and elderly for Good Shepherd Parish. In 1997, Sister Margaret Louise received the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester Vita Award for her dedication to consistent life ethics.She is survived by several nieces and nephews and the Sisters of Mercy.


Friends are welcome Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Mercy Center, 1437 Blossom Road, where her vigil service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Her funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, March 8 at 10:30 a.m. at Mercy Center. Interment will follow at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to the Sisters of Mercy.
