I had Sister Gonzaga in 7th and 8th grades at St. John the Evangelist School. She was funny, wry, intimidating, wonderful. One of the few nuns who, despite her ability to intimidate, clearly showed that she LIKED children, even those of us on the challenging brink of adolescence. She used to hook her thumbs in her nun's belt, wearing that thick strap of leather low, like a gunslinger, only what she packed was more powerful than firearms - her enormous black rosary. She would talk sometimes out of the side of her mouth, with dripping sarcasm, but the twinkle in her eye let you know she'd do you no harm. She could be mesmerizing. Then later I knew her at mercy as Virginia Wilson (Post Vatican II!) An astounding transformation, as all those Vatican II transformations were: she was even more wonderful, and so human, in that incarnation, too. A woman you could model yourself after. I hadn't known her motto was "Sacrifice through Mary" but i guess i absorbed it through osmosis. Fare thee well, Ginny/Gonzaga - heaven was made for the likes o' you. see more
